vironment. Using costumes, props, and the distinctive music and dance of Ireland, Themselves brings to life the tale of a young, 19th-century Irish woman who leaves the devastation of the Potato Famine and journeys to America. This interactive program invites participants to sing along, answer questions, and even try the harp! Audiences discover why people leave their homeland, what it’s like to depart, how it feels to arrive in a new country and encounter prejudice, and ultimately, what it means to be an American. An Immigrant’s Story provides an excellent springboard for year-round explorations of family and social history, cultural heritage, and the immigration experience.
The extensive educational background of the members of
Themselves includes performances for the Lincoln Center Student Program, Connecticut Ballet’s In-School program, Bridgeport’s Discovery Museum, Yale University, the Connecticut Historical Society, and teaching music education and dance in public and private schools.
